new ideas for old formats.

Berru Collective presents the installation Electromagnetic Interference System (2021). Iteration of a system composed of a screen, a sensor and a converter. The system is in a feedback loop and in dynamic equilibrium, generated by (re)injecting electromagnetic interference as video in the operation of each screen. The sound of this behaviour is visible in the object and amplified in space.
Electromagnetic Interference System, supported by Escola das Artes and Lipor, will be presented at Garagem 180 (Rua Miguel Bombarda, 425, Porto) on the 20th of November at 7pm and will be available to visit by appointment (+351 936 458 239) until the 27th of November.
In 180 Media Lab, Pedro Maia presents his work Variations on Negative Space (2021). Using 16mm analogue film as a point of departure, Pedro Maia pushes the possibilities of materiality and form of the medium itself. With Variations on Negative Space we are confronted with a body of work that begs a question. Is what we’re looking at a computer-generated image? A painting? An experimental film? While the term ‘variation’ refers to improvisation, interpretation and chance, 'negative space' refers to what is not there, what is hidden between the lines.
This performance, with soundtrack by Joana da Conceição, will be inaugurated on 20th November at 7pm at Atelier Sérgio Rebelo and will be open to the public everyday from 10am to 7pm, until 27th November.
The society is drowning in a deluge of visual rhetoric, otherwise known as “image”. Reflection, communication, manipulation, infinite future are some of its many features, and all with one coordinate: finance. Through conversation, sound, writing, performance and video work, NOINDEX is a collective project that desires a dislocation of this centralized coordinate and aims to strip away its visual cues and impulse triggers until all that remains is a future we imagine together, instead of the one we’re always being shown.
For 180 Media Lab the colective NOINDEX will present a "home shopping" broadcast where the viewer can buy NFTs and images from many artworks. As hosts we will have MC Damara Ingles (XR Experiences and virtual fashion designer), Amar Ediriwira (artistic director of Boiler Room), Clayton Vomero (director and NOINDEX documentary filmmaker) and Srećko Horvat (philosopher). DJ Firmeza will create the soundtrack for the show.
People are invited to join NOINDEX online through a live show on Canal180's Twitch and Canal180 on TV (NOS, MEO, VODAFONE TV) on November 25th at 7pm.

180 Media Lab Live will mark the end of a week of fun and experimentation in Porto. As a final performance we have arranged a cabaret mixing all our participants and new friends in a fusion of filmed content and live performances. A fast paced 10-minute piece will include both collaborations and individual pieces across genres, disciplines and narratives. We aimed to embrace improvisation and experimentation to birth original ideas. On this date we will share them with you.

ARTISTS
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet
Berru is a collective of artists who have been developing works based on the exploration of different mechanisms, concepts and materials. They work indistinctly with moving images, sculpture, sound, new media, and there is always a very dynamic and performative element in all their pieces. The devices created by these artists demand forms of activity from their public. The "vita contemplativa" gives way here to "vita activa" in which the audience is invited to follow the dynamic process of development of their works; which are not immediately finished, but are a process that we are all asked to follow and, in some way, finalize.

ABOUT
180 Media Lab gathers disruptive talent from multiple worlds in a programme that aims to rethink culture in both in real life and online. More experimental than technical, the programme offers a multidisciplinary and wide-ranging perspective on the creation of new cultural forms and means of expression for the future. It goes beyond new aesthetics: we aim to embrace improvisation and experimentation to birth original ideas.
During this week of inquiries, we want to manifest an evolution of old formats. We need to look at future ways of expression and how they can come into being beyond traditional cinema, television, theatre, galleries, schools, university, etc. Let’s not reinvent the wheel but embrace our moment of change.

This is not an academy. This is not a festival. This is not an exhibition. This is not a broadcast. This is not a concert. This is not a residency.
This is experimental, hybrid, conceptual, unusual, strange, playful, odd and contradictory and all of the above. An intersection of Music, Sound, Art, Film, Tech and Conversations.
180 Media Lab takes place both offline and online between the 20 and 27 November 2021.
